After 3 years of shopping (and by that I mean not really shopping) in Germany with an outrageous exchange rate and high prices, shopping in Turkey has been AMAZING. Loves it. Maybe a little too much. You already know about my rugs, but now let me share with you some other things I love love buying here in Turkey.
(In case you don't know me, this post is not meant to brag, just to share. My husband and I follow Dave Ramsey's budget planning system, so know that we aren't dropping crazy money on things. We save up and buy things we love with cash. Not sure why I felt the need to add a disclaimer, but there you go. No nasty comments.)
1. Scarves!
The scarves here are to die for. The quality is amazing, the price is great, and the designs are unique. I store mine in an over the door shoe holder. I may need another one soon!
2. Furniture
We decided it was finally time to get rid of our Target amazing-ness, so we took some photos and ideas to a local furniture store. In fact, I tore out a page from a P0ttery B@rn catalog and took it in and then gave my ideas for changes. 6 weeks later I had my custom made furniture delivered to my house. Two end tables, coffee table, and TV stand all for less than the price of the PB TV stand.
3. Framing
Getting things framed in Germany was out of control. Because of that, we had a pile of things I wanted to put on the wall that just sat around because paying $100/frame wasn't going to happen. Luckily I live in Turkey now!!! So, I took in some photos I took in Dublin (thanks Snapfish for the great prints!), a print from the Van Gogh museum, and a papyrus from Egypt. All framed in a week for $80. Ludicrous!
4. Malls
The malls here, while more expensive than the small stores, kick Germany's butt! I found two stores I really like- LC Waikiki and Stradivarius. The one above is in Mersin, a coastal resort type town. We went there on Veteran's Day with a group from the base. When it was time to leave I got a little teary. It was so fun! I got a really cute faux leather jacket for 50 Lira! I got headbands for 15 Lira! I want to go back right now!

Wow! You've found some great stuff, and I'm so jealous of the furniture!
We've been trying to upgrade some IKEA and Target furniture that we have, and everything is just so expensive!
So cute! And it makes me want to move to Turkey now...
I am totally jealous of the custom furniture pieces!! That's incredible!
I'm one of those people that gets a rush from a good deal, and that furniture would have killed me ha! LOVE the pics you took in Dublin!
I am so jealous about your furniture! That's amazing.
Wow! The furniture is gorgeous!! What a deal!
The furniture is definitely the best part, I think! And it looks great!! I also love scarves and the door pictures! :o)
That furniture is unreal ... congratulations on grown up pieces! :)
Congrats! I always wondered about such things....like also the process of going to a Korean store with an ad of your favorite outfit...and getting it custom-made and cheap. In Belgium, we can get great antique furniture at much lower prices than the US and Germany....but that's about it! Thanks for sharing!
I just found this blog. Pretty neat. We lived at Incirlik a few years back. I have to agree the shopping is great and so are the people. It seems as though you have the exact same layout of the home we had. I got a little nostalgic :) I enjoyed reading about your adventures. Good luck to you and your family.
