And my followers will drop...now.
As I flew back to Europe (on a Northwest flight through Detroit, no less) I couldn't help but thinking about what was to be a Christmas Day act of terrorism. (Yes, TERRORISM.) I got to thinking about the information that has since surfaced about the case:
-The man bought a one way ticket with cash, and checked no luggage.
-The man had no passport.
-The man was on some sort of list, and was feared by his own father.
The fact that these items (single handedly or collectively) failed to raise a red flag at any point along the way is pretty outrageous. Perhaps even more outrageous (no, not global warming, but that's crazy too), is that the possible security measures that could have prevented this attack are still being debated. Why? Because they are offensive. They invade privacy.
What I would like to know is in what universe does someones' privacy take precedence over my LIFE?! If a full body scan will help catch underwear bombers, then scan me- I hope you like the view. If my bags need to be searched, then so be it. If you need to feel me up to successfully pat me down, then you do what you have to do. Here's the deal- if you don't have anything to hide, then you don't have anything to worry about. Afraid somebody will see your underwear? Well, I am even more afraid that they won't see what's under the underwear of the guy next to me.
Further more, if you have reason to believe that there is a whacko on the loose by the name of Casey that matches my description, PROFILE ME. Please. Do not, however, pull a little old lady out of line when you should be spending your time on the man behind her. It's common sense.
Maybe it's offensive. So what. America needs to step up and do what needs to be done. Let's stop worrying about who will get their bombing panties in a wad and get real. Terrorists should be scared to step on a plane bound for the US, and if that take inconveniencing some people, then so be it. If that means that Muslims are screened, particularly those from suspect countries, then that's what we need to do. If that means that you have to have a passport (what a novel idea) then so be it. I'm tired of my safety being compromised for the comfort of someone else.
Be offensive.
**Update: I see that people agree, but take issue with the Muslim bit. I think you are missing my point. If we have proof that the current threat is from Muslim extremists (and we do) then why should our screeners have to spend extra time screening little old ladies from Memphis. If the suspect you are looking for only has one eye, do you question everyone with two eyes? No, you use the process of elimination to save yourself needless work. Check everyone, but spend time where it is needed. Am I saying that all Muslims are bad? No! What I am saying is that the extremists and terrorists we are being attacked by all have a common characteristic, and we should use that knowledge to our advantage in the screening process. As the queen of offensive Ann Coulter says, "Not all Muslims are terrorists, but all terrorists are Muslims." (In context- she explains that this is regarding the current, not historical, world situation.) Or, "Airports scrupulously apply the same laughably ineffective airport harassment to Suzy Chapstick as to Muslim hijackers. It is preposterous to assume every passenger is a potential crazed homicidal maniac. We know who the homicidal maniacs are. They are the ones cheering and dancing right now."

Amen sister!!!
I'm sorry if you are inconvenienced or pissed off that your tube of toothpaste got thrown away or they put you in the full body scanner. But you know what? I'd rather you be inconvenienced than all of us end up dead.
I don't understand how it is even a debate??? How on earth can someone possibly justify retaining these old methods to "preserve" privacy when we have incident after incident?
Seriously, amen! I'm an avid traveler and it shocks me every. single. time. that people both in front and behind me in the security lines get annoyed and irritated when they're asked to take off their shoes and jackets. It annoys me to no end when they complain that the security process takes too long.
Well, call me crazy, but I like to know that the plane i'm getting on is safe, and if that means I have to smell your stinky feet and you have to bear your arms for a few minutes, then do it!
AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!
I couldn't agree more!!!!!!!!!!!!
YES!!! thank you!
I mean really... we're in an age where women wear less clothing daily and groups of people do underwear subway rides just for shits and giggles....
people need to just suck it up and enjoy their SAFE plane ride.
As for little old ladies- Nanny sets off the metal detectors with all the pins and bone replacements in her body. She gets a kick out of being pulled over for an extra check.
I couldn't agree more! i can't say it any better than the ladies above me already have. our country needs to get it together.
I totally agree that there should be stronger security, but I disagree that all Muslim people should be checked. How bout ALL people should be checked! I travelled over the holidays too and I could not believe how many people were huffing and puffing because they had to stand in line longer, or because their flights were delayed for security reasons. If it means that I will make it home alive, it's fine by me if I'm 3 hours late!
Totally agree with you except the fact about Muslims. Honestly, there are a lot of Muslims that you wouldn't even know are Muslim because they don't "look" Muslim. I agree with the poster above that everyone needs to be checked.
But people also need to remember that this flight originated OUTSIDE of the US so it wasn't a breach of security on our end the day of the flight.
Casey you are HILARIOUS! And just so you know every FA I have talked to has been complaining about the new "precautions" at the gate, I stood in line flying back to work and watched several people be pulled out for a random check, these people were with families, they were business men (Platinum status with the airline), little old ladies. I watched multiple people who I as a flight attendant would find suspicious, not for the color of their skin but for their behavior. THEY let those individuals on the airplane without a second thought. That scared me.
For me as a flight attendant for the same exact airline (btw woohoo for flying us haha) I have fears. I am every single day getting up and getting on airplanes that could be blown up by the people they are letting walk by. I would be one of the first people injured or killed if a terrorist were on bored. I don't want the husbands and little old ladies pulled out of line. I want the men and women who are with no one else, who don't smile, or show emotion. I want the people with one small bag (which is SO out of the normal ... everyone packs everything) to be pulled out. I want if there is going to be security check points there for them to take it seriously and check out the individuals who actually look suspicious.
Those are my simple views and those are the views I stand by.
Anywho, great entry! sorry for my rant. LOL
Amen! Completely support what you have to say!
I would much rather stand in long security lines and know we're safe than to worry! When my sisters and I flew (domestic flights) to Wisconsin, both admitted that they had things in their carry-on bags that shouldn't have made it through security. And a girl I work with (who is 18) made it through security with a pair of sharp scissors in her bag!!
That's terrifying! I agree, every single person needs to be checked!
Ok, i agree for the most part. However, every time there is a new "development" in shit-head terrorism technology, a new rule is implemented. Shoe bomber? Everyone's shoes must be scanned. Someone lights his bunghole on fire during the last hour of a US bound international flight? No one is allowed to move during the last hour of all US bound international flights.
These measures will not stop terrorism and it's innovation. At a point, the rules become arbitrary and stupid. I agree with a thorough full body scan and pat down, searching of bags, xraying of my luggage, etc. If we did all that, I could bring my plasmoid substances on board once they had been certified non-bombs and I wouldn't have to take off my shoes! AND you wouldn't have to sit firmly in place for an hour.
Husband and I had a lengthy conversations about this the other day...
I'm with Ann Coulter. Not all Muslims are terrorist but all terrorist are definitely Muslim! PROFILE THEM!
Ha Ha... I love your posts. I completely agree! I fly all the time and I've been pulled out of the line for special screening several times. I always think to myself "When a 5'2" blonde girl tries to bomb a plane, then you should screen me every time I fly and I WON'T be offended. Until then focus on someone else. I'm a waste of time." UGH....
Yes, treating me and my puppy like terrorists because of my swiss army knife infuriates me when a few weeks later the guy with exploding underpants is let on a plane with not even a second glance!!! It is insane.
Newt Gingrich wrote a really good article about this topic last week titled "It's time to know, to profile and to discriminate" :) I think you will like it!
http://newt.org/tabid/102/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/4708/Default.aspx
I'm so sick of attempted or successful terrorist attacks and the U.S. gov't saying "oh hey, we did know about that one". Its pathetic and makes our whole country look foolish.
The TSA publishes a list of what you can and can't bring as carry-on, so if ppl are getting bent out of shape because their hand cream or toothpaste isn't allowed on the plane, they should have taken the time to read the highly available list of prohibited items.
Not all stereotypes are true, but they came from somewhere....
Coulter has a great series of articles regarding airport security, compiled in the "How to Talk to a Liberal" book. I always take it with me when I fly - just to remind myself that I'm not the only one who thinks the TSA is a joke.
I AGREE! Scan me up baby, I'd rather be safe than sorry!
I agree with everything. Including the Muslim part, for what it's worth. And I understood that you meant it as a process of elimination, not a stance that all Muslims are bad. The cold hard facts are that "Muslim" happen to be one characteristic of the terrorists nowadays.
I WHOLE-HEARTEDLY agree with you! Get there at least an extra hour early.. maybe two... to make sure you have plenty of time to get through security. And just prepare yourself to get checked. No complaining!! Your life is at stake here. Keep in mind that you may get searched and wear some decent undies. No thongs while flying!
I AGREE with everything you said!! You go girl!
YES! Seriously, if you have nothing to hide, why are you making it more difficult for everyone involved?! And as for people who are worried about these new x-ray screen machines, and their pictures showing up on the internet? Ummm let's just say its nothing none of us haven't seen before people. Please, check out my naked body. It's nothing special I promise you that. :-)
I completely agree! I go to work each day at the airport and unfortunately most people don't feel the way you do.
I totally agree! Have you read the book "God's War on Terror"? I think you should pick it up. It is very enlightening, but beware - it is a weighty read!
PREACH ON SISTER!!!!!
i don't want to feel warm and fluffy when flying. I want to feel safe.
I don't want to worry about the dude beside me.
I want to know that someone did their job and stopped the morons from attempting to attack us in the first place.
oh i heart you even more. I was going to blog on this {perhaps i still will I just dont want you to think ive ripped you off}. heres my take on it. I dont get this whole invasion of privacy whole body scan thing. hell take me in a room and strip search me if thats my option versus possibly being blown up to a million peices or flown into a building I'll take the invasion of privacy.
and as for the profiling. come on folks. when blonde hair (allright allright light brown hair) blue eyed white folks start flying planes into buildings I'll be profiled. oh wait, my mind drifts back to the IRA back in the 80s and WE WERE PROFILED! if we were flying in ireland or england but still.
Totally with you Casey! Since 99% of the current threats to Europeans and US carriers are in fact Muslim males between the ages of 18 and 40, profile 'em.
Not being as attractive as many of your readers, I doubt anyone wants to see me in that scanner, so bring 'em on.
I definitely agree with you and am sick of hearing people bitch and moan because now it is going to take them longer to get to their flights. Get over it. I would much rather be safe than sorry.
The woman who let this terrorist on the plane WITHOUT a passport should be arrested for aiding and abeding. I asked my husband what the deal was with these red flags being over looked and he said the issue is that NSA, CIA, Interpol, and FBI HATE working together. They individually want to catch the bad guys and get the glory. They still haven't learned from their 9/11 mistakes. Maybe one day these "intelligence" groups will get their butts in gear. Until then...I am so not offended.
the 'p.c.' train has seriously derailed over the years. there is a difference between being 'sensitive' and being 'ignorant.' i don't understand what we're gaining from ignoring the obvious for the sake of 'feelings.' i just want to be safe.
great post.
HOORAH!!!
I totally agree!!!
With all of it including your update!!!
If I have to go through all of that to know that I AM SAFE...then by all means please do!!!
You won't be losing this reader.
I was very shocked the last few times I flew, I have pins and titanium rods in my leg and I didn't set off any metal detectors! My husband bought a cheap one at a pawn shop that picks up my metal, it makes me wonder what else the airport metal detectors aren't picking up? Every time I've flown, I have worn sandals or flip-flops to go through security for this reason, I pack tennis shoes in my carry-on and change into them at the gate. Why don't more people think that way?
I back you 100%!! Even if I did get frisked at the Heathrow Airport last year so they wouldn't be accused of profiling. Yep, the short, pasty, freckled girl is soooo threatening. Hahaha!
Fine line between rights and privileges. But safety precautions should trump convenience every time. It is a privilege to fly... not a right.
I get profiled seemingly frequently - I look middle eastern and have the (good? bad?) fortune of sharing my surname with half the population of the Islamic world. And I set of flags by doing things like buying tickets last minute (planning not my forte) or going one way. But I've never had a problem with being "randomly selected for additional screening".
As for invasions of privacy, the TSA guys and girls screen thousands of passengers a day. Honestly, how vain are we to think that they're hoping they get to pat us down for a cheap thrill. Please! Besides, can you imagine having to pat down some fairly unpleasant people? I wouldn't want the job and I'm all for making it easier for them and more secure for us.
Yes, yes and yes! Somebody's gotta say it! By setting a good example of being willing to conform to newfangled security measures, we can only hope to spread the feeling to others. Safety first!
I'll add my two thumbs up to the list - nicely said.
Hehe - actually, I thought your post was well written and not really offensive. :) As other people have said, you can't just search Muslims (how would you do that anyways; I'm American, white girl (European decent) who is Muslim), but it would be nice if our security would get better about recognizing behavior patterns that are common in people about to commit crimes/acts of violence...
Also, most people I know who are of an Arab background (more among actual Arabs (ie, not American/European Arabs), but that's because they are used to it in their countries), they are for the most part ok with extra security because they don't want to get hurt any more than anyone else!! (They don't like being profiled, but most don't mind the extra security to be safe... It's all about how you approach it, I think)
Quick note - the Nigerian guy did have a passport and visa to the U.S. You can't fly without a passport/visa to the US and the visa is in the passport. I keep hearing, 'why did they not cancel his visa' when he got on the list- as someone who deals with student visas, I can say that none of these systems are tied together all that well and it's actually really easy for someone to get into the U.S. even with a canceled visa!! As another poster said, the U.S. agencies hate working with each other and there is not only bad communication, but the systems that are in place to provide checks are not necessarily updated at very quick speeds.
Things will happen (I mean, if someone wants to kill themselves, it's rather hard to stop that because what do they have to lose?), but I wish there was a better focus in our security on identifying solid BEHAVIORS that could tip off officials better towards threats. (ie, the father contacting the embassy) And then the agencies talking to each other better :)
Right on right on!
Saw this today and thought you'd be interested, given the topic: http://biggovernment.com/2010/01/05/al-qaedas-successful-attack/
For sure!! I totally agree. Thanks for posting this Casey!
EXCELENT POST!!!!!!!!!!!
when my family was flying back from orlando *disney world vacay* they took my little brother (FIVE years old) into a room because he had a PLASTIC GREEN pirates of the caribbean sword in his bag.
(his toys didnt all fit in the checked back since his stuff went into my moms bag)
my parents argued with security for 30 minutes before they finally allowed us to to take it and move on
hmmm....do most people who hijack a plane bring their spouse, kids, and use a plastic green mini sword to threaten the other passengers???????????
I agree with EVERYTHING you wrote...INCLUDING the muslim part!!!
I agree with the terrorist= muslim comments
why profile everyone? I dont hear about any southern baptist suicide bombers. Hindu plane hijackers, or Buddhist boxer bombs threatening civillian lives!!!
its okay to profile people for the overall safety of EVERYONE else
Thoughtful post. I'm sure 95% of non-terrorist Muslims appreciate the extra security measures as well.
We are a country AT WAR - safety first.
OMG!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!
seriously, I agree with every word. 100%.
Besides that, I really enjoy your blog. :)
all my best,
Amanda
