Questions and Answers

First, thanks for all the congrats about grad school. I wasn't "stressed" necessarily, but it is nice to be sure!

Here are some of the questions you have asked recently...

1. Will you be moving back to the states soon and doing classes online? (asked in some form by Typ0, Sassy E, Gleatie, and Becca)
We will be PCSing in 2010. We are hoping for a remote and then somewhere warm. Of course, we never know. Because of this, I will be taking classes online. Luckily, UNT offers the degree online with the exception of 2 weeks during 1 summer.

2. Do you mind if I follow your blog?
(asked by High Heels)
Of course not! You will help me make-up for Toodles and all the other people who go psycho when you express an opinion other than their own. I mean, if someone wants to have no life, kick cats, or wear ugly clothes- I am going to have an opinion. Hopefully you appreciate this enough to keep following. :)

3. Did you go on a Gondola ride in Venice? (AB Typ0)
We did not. Unfortunately, it was not in the budget. Did you know they run around 150 euro?! We did a water bus instead. Not quite as romantic, but we still got to see the sights. Oh yes, and see Croatia. For less than it cost to ride a gondola!

4. Where did you get your white coat? (AB New Girl)
This is going to surprise you. I got it at Old Navy! On sale! I saw a lady at church with a white coat and really wanted one. This one is perfect. Silky lining, nice winter white color, and the right price. Although, I am a little peeved at ON at the moment. My order from January still hasn't arrived!

Okay, that's all I think!

Question

As anyone who knows a teacher can tell you, the most difficult part is not the students, it's not even the paperwork, most of the time- it's the parents.

Now, I must preface this with the fact that in my two years as a teacher I have been blessed with AMAZING (classroom) parents. They have been kind, helpful, and caring. I still keep in touch with many of them today. (One even reads the blog!) Have I had a few that were not so hot? Sure. Heck, I even laughed during a parent conference once. And not because of a joke. He said he didn't understand why his child wasn't gifted, since he was highly gifted himself. That's funny crap, right? Oops. Overall though, I really haven't had any "horror" stories.

That being said, I am seeing them left and right this year! I have decided that the behavior of the kids is usually a direct reflection of the parent. Want to know why a student is disrespectful, talk to his mom for 5 minutes.

Today, a parent called the school and said that their child (who was in trouble yesterday for being disrespectful) wasn't being disrespectful by ignoring a teacher. He didn't say a word. That sweet little angel. So, how could he be disrespectful?

Thoughts? Anyone?

Yeeessssss!

Hello, my name is Casey, and I was accepted into grad school!!!!!!!!! Oh yeah. Oh yeah. Oh yeah. I start this fall!

I will be going for my masters in Library Science, with an emphasis in school certification. It should take me two years of part time, including summers. I will be attending the University of North Texas! Go Mean Green!

I'm a little nervous about balancing it with teaching, but I think it can work.

If only I could quit my job and just go to school....
(You should comment on what a good idea that is so Jordan can "hear" you!)

Traveling Tuesday

With the economic state as it is, a budget is increasingly important. This also applies when traveling. I thought some of you might be interested in how we travel here, while staying within our means.

-Plan. This may seem simple, but it is important. We already have a rough sketch of our travel for the next year and a half. This allows us to know what we need to save, and also allows us to hit the big places in shoulder season.

-Utilize shoulder season travel. For instance, by taking our cruise in October instead of August, we save A LOT of money. By seeing Paris in February we saved, and were also able to avoid many of the hour+ long lines for popular places.

-Budget your travel into your monthly budget. Even if you are only taking one big trip a year. We use Dave Ramsey's system for budgeting, each month we have a certain amount set aside for travel. We try to travel every month. However, if we plan a big trip, like Egypt, we typically don't travel the month before, and add the 2 month's budget together. If you plan to take a Jamaican vacation in December, split the cost up over the year and save for it. This will keep you from charging expenses, and having to pay interest on a trip.

-Invest in a good guidebook. Our guidebook of choice for Europe is Rick Steves. (Side note: We buy them used or check them out from the library. He is a non-military supporting guy, so we in turn will not directly support him with our money.) Knowing tips like museum passes, line shortcuts, budget hotels, free bathrooms, and traps to avoid can save you money in the long run. We also utilize Rick Steves free audio guides, downloaded to our ipods. These are walking tours of major museums and cities, and allow us to skip purchasing them for 6 euro a piece!

-In Europe, Bed and Breakfasts are the way to go. Well, for us they are. If we had a General's salary, this might be different. However, for the money we pay, we have really been happy. The service is better than big hotels, because you usually have the owners there at all times. We also like the small boutique atmosphere of the places. Our thought is that we would rather take 2 trips than stay in a 5 star hotel for one trip! That being said, I am NOT a hostel girl. I draw the line somewhere.

-Within Europe, check out low-cost airlines such as Ryan Air, German Wings, and TUI Fly. These airlines offer deals depending on the day, so check back often. If you see a good price, book it right then, it may be gone the next day. Also, plan accordingly for these flights. J and I always try to check just a carry on for weekend trips. This saves us on the cost of checking a bag.

-Use tripadvisor.com to check out your place. We have always had good luck with Trip Advisor recommendations, and have saved a lot of heartache by not just booking from a random sight.

-When booking, book directly with the airline or hotel. I have NEVER been able to find a lower rate on a travel site. Check the sites, and check direct. I promise you will see direct is the way to go.

-Find a good travel agent. Here in Europe, find one on the economy. When researching Spring Break trips, most of the ones offered by on-base agents were pretty pricey, and would essentially be like taking a trip with everyone we know from base. Our agent found us a great deal on a Nile cruise. That being said, do you research as well. For my flight to the states, the agent wasn't the best way to go.

-Don't be afraid to get lost. You will see so much more of a city by exploring back streets and peeking into little shops. Staying only on "tourist trap" type routes, you won't get the entire experience. The only place I was scared to venture off the beaten path was Sicily, it got a little hairy for a bit!

If we can travel like we do on a 2LT's and a teacher's salaries, then you can travel too!

Questions? Let me know!

New Look, Again!

Changing the look of the blog yet again. What do you think? Do you still know it's me?

Don't forget to check out my post below on Croatia as well!

Tschuss!

Croatia

After an hour and a half more of driving, the purchase of a "toll tag" for Slovenia, and a extended period of passport checking by the border control in Croatia, we finally arrived in Porec. Our B&B was great! The restaurant inside was also awesome. Plus, the owners spoke German, so I at least had a chance of communicating. You know, since I know NO Croatian.

Since we went during the off season, it wasn't crowded, nor was much open. However, it was great to have the town to ourselves. This is a place we would love to come back to when it is warmer. It is the warm weather destination for most Germans since it is inexpensive, nice, and fairly close.

Look how clear the water is!

And on the drive back to Italy, my sweet husband made a u-turn just so I could get this fabulous shot. I love him! (And my new camera, I decided on the Nikon D60 and it's great!)

That's all the big travels until Egypt. Countdown- 39 days!

Miramare

After visiting Venice 2 days we headed to Croatia. On our way, we planned a stop in Trieste to see the Miramare castle. (Pronounced meer uh mar) Before I show you one of our favorite parts of the trip, I must also show you my least favorite.

On Saturday night we stayed in Treviso at a cute Bed and Breakfast
Side note: Bed and Breakfasts in Europe are nothing like in the states. They are usually family run and pretty basic. However, you get great service, and save a lot of money!
When I went to ring the bell to check in the BIGGEST DOG EVER came to the gate. Um hello, dogs are on my top three "hate" list. And when I say big, I mean big. I tell Jordan this, and he says I am exaggerating. By the time J gets to the gate, the big dog is gone, and a Yorkie is in its place. Now he really thinks I am lying. Finally, Sunday morning, J saw the dog. The puppy, the one year old GIANT puppy.

Here is the B&B owner with J and the two dogs. The picture doesn't even do justice to how HUGE this thing is. Check it out- Irish Wolfhounds

After that craziness we got on the road. The drive is really pretty simple. We used a GPS through Italy, then just followed signs through Slovenia and Croatia. We were able to find a parking spot quickly and head up to the castle. The scenery was just gorgeous. Trieste (and the castle) are on the coast.

The more you walk, the more the castle comes into view. Gorgeous!

Castle Miramare was built by Archduke Maxamilian in the late 1800's. He was an army leader, and eventually, Emperor of Mexico.

The gardens built around the castle are just as famous and are gorgeous even in the winter!

We were able to go inside the house, but no photos were allowed. Luckily we were also able to go to the balcony and got some great shots there. Can you imagine having your morning coffee with this view?

This is the kind of road trip rest stop I could get used too!

I'm It!

I was recently tagged with the bag tag! Here are the rules:

1. Post a picture of the bag/purse/handbag/pocketbook {whatever you call it!} that you are carrying! Now, don't you even think about going back there to your closet and getting that cute little clutch that you carried before you had children or the last time you went out ;-) I want to see the purse that you carried today!

2. Tell us how much it cost! Oh my, I know what you are thinking - a Southern Belle neva discusses matters of money, darlin'. Well, yes, but today we are gonna break that rule and tell! Yes, tell how much it cost. We won't judge! This is for entertainment purposes only! And if there is a story that goes along with this purse, tell it!!

3. Tag some other girls. It will be fun to see what everybody else posts :-)

So here is my bag...

I purchased this bag in Venice. Oh that feels so good to say. :) There was a little (Italian of course) leather shop on one of the back streets of Venice. I saw it the first night and just loved this bag. The second night I knew I had to have it!

The cost? 35 Euro. Not bad at all!

(And YES, I took these pictures at school. The kids were at lunch. Stop judging.)

Inside...
My makeup bag from Dublin with a cute lipstick zipper pull.
Eat This/Not That bibles (these things are great!)
Coach coin purse
Umbrella and earmuffs, stupid German weather
Ipod Touch (loves!)
Best hand lotion ever!
Shopping bag in a tiny case
Wet wipes, keys, phone- the essentials
The best coin holder ever. A MUST for Euro!

Also, Carrie over at Running in Stilettos awarded me this beauty...

The lowdown: "These blogs are exceedingly charming. These kind bloggers aim to find and be friends. They are not interested in self-aggrandizement. Our hope is that when the ribbons of these prizes are cut, even more friendships are propagated. Please give more attention to these writers. Deliver this award to eight bloggers who must choose eight more and include this cleverly-written text into the body of their award!"

For both of these I tag/award:
Laura (my sis)
Both USO Girls (Caroline and Jamie)
Erin (@ unexpected army, before she gets a diaper bag purse!)
Sara (When In Rome)
Becca (Lovely Yellow Ribbons)
Renee (Life with My Special K's)

6 sounds like a good number, right?

Venice!

So after a morning trip to the doctor for a pink eye flair up, we hopped on the train to Venice. The cool thing about the train is that as you go over the bridge and on to the island, it is surreal. It's the weirdest feeling, being in a place as iconic as Venice. Going into a city and leaving cars behind. As soon as you step out of the station you realize you are THERE.

The best thing about Venice is just walking around. Even getting lost leads you to amazing places. The number of times I said to Jordan that I felt like we were in one of those cheesily decorated Italian restaurants in the states may just outnumber the pieces of pizza I ate! (Below are pictures of random places and things on our many walks.)

Rialto Bridge was a favorite stop...

And then, of course, you must end up in St. Mark's square with the beautiful basilica (where Mark is buried).

Saturday, we headed into Venice again, this time for Carnivale! Carnival is the European equivalent to Mardi Gras. Luckily, it is much more tame here. There is still tons of fun things, but people understand alcohol here. As you can see it was MUCH more crowded this time! I was glad to have had Friday to explore before the crowds.

Can you imagine a better Valentine's day than Venice with your hubby? Paris you say? Oh, that was last year. :)

By request, more pics here- Facebook

Bases and Castles

As you know, I arrived in Italy Wednesday evening. We had dinner at a wonderful restaurant with some amazing Moscato. (I may or may not have had the entire bottle...) Yum!

Since I wasn't able to really see things in the dark the night before, when I saw everything I was in love. I LOVE this base. I would move to Aviano in a heartbeat.

The view from the (awesome) BX.

Thursday the spouses headed to Pordenone for the day for some shopping. I got some jeans and a sweater from TUC of Benetton- on sale SUPER cheap. The jeans were 12 euro! I also go to visit Sephora! Yeah! Of course, I forgot my camera. Hopefully Leslie (are you excited to be mentioned on the blog Leslie?) will email some pics soon.

Thursday night we headed to Castle Brando for a fancy dinner/awards banquet. Since Jordan was busy running around, I got some more time to hang out with my spouse friends who were also there. (Notice Leslie, I said FRIENDS, not older spouses. Ha!)

I decided on a dress that was in my closet. From Sophomore year in high school. Ha!

And now for Sophomore year. If you laugh I will kill you.

Did I mention we rode in an Air Force bus to the event? And that I brought wine, And drank it on the bus? Or how about that I opened it up while sitting right behind the driver, popping the cork toward his head? Oh, I didn't mention all that? Sorry.

The view from the castle.

And that's all for now.

Excuse the low quality pictures. I didn't buy my fancy camera until Saturday :) I can't wait to show you those!

Still to come- Venice, Miramare, and Croatia...

**Update**
Looks like Pelosi was also at Aviano this weekend. Why we didn't meet up, I have no idea. We are BFF after all.

Also, I found this pic on Facebook from (mostly liquid) lunch on our shopping day.

The GRE is #1!!

Why is the GRE number one? Oh, I am sooo glad you asked. (Just as glad as I am when people ask me about my black boots and I can snobbily reply I bought them in Paris. Yep. I do that, and I like it.)

When we got home last night my GRE test scores were waiting on the stairs. I already knew I made a 1080 on the math and verbal sections, I was waiting on my writing scores from the essays. I was particularly nervous about this as it is weighted heavily by my college of choice, and had been told by the other girls was graded pretty hard. Oh yes, and because my writing consists of blogging, and I was afraid to use too many winky faces in the essay.

Soooo, guess what I got?

A 5.5!!!!! Out of 6!!!! That means my score is higher than 90% of all test takers. Sweet!

Just wanted to share. I was so excited! Now, the GRE is #1 on my kicking butt and taking names list of course!

Pictures of Venice and Croatia up soon!

PS- In case you are reading this, thank you Ms. Switzer. I owe all my writing skills to you. I will be emailing you this soon!

Yeah!

Well, I made it to Italy safe and sound yesterday! Just a quick 1 hour flight.

On the way down I sat next to an Army couple stationed in Kansas, in front of an Air Force guy stationed in Italy, and across from a lady that work for USAA. Do you think there is a little bit of an American presence here?

My sweet husband picked me up, and it was sooo good to see him! He is my best friend for sure, and I miss him when he is gone. Then we headed to eat, Italian food of course! I had a bottle, I mean a few glasses, of lovely Moscato and just enjoyed being in Italy with my husband.

Today Jordan is off to work, and I am shopping with the wives. Tonight is the ball! Yeah!

Forgot to mention:
1. Flying over the Alps is INCREDIBLE. I almost cried. Twice. The turbulence is also incredible. Worst of my life.

2. I sent the note home to the parents saying why their child is learning sign language, and what they have learned. I didn't have to do it, it was my choice. It was my little way of saying, "I know what you said, now keep you mouth shut." Hopefully she shuts up now.

Tuesday, February 10, 2009

Do it NOW!

Only one more post until Sara gives away some lovely perfume. Hurry! Go enter!

PS- This is for her 400th post! Whoa! Amazing!

You Have GOT to be Kidding Me!

As many of you know I teach Kindergarten. I coordinate book orders for the entire school, answer the phone and direct office traffic when people are out, do lunch duty, etc. Oh yes, and I teach Sign Language. To every kid in the school.

Now, I don't typically mind this. I love Sign Language, and it is fun to see the kiddos enjoy it as well. However, it is a great deal of work to do an entire set of lesson plans and activities with no curriculum or materials whatsoever. I have to do A LOT of research and A LOT of work.

And yet, people still complain. Their kid says they would rather do something else and don't learn anything.

UHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

A- Ask me what they are learning! I know this may come as a shock, but kids sometimes exaggerate. I know, surprising isn't it?
B- Your kid is a giant pouter. He refuses to participate and craps around.
C- I teach ALL DAY EVERY DAY. I apologize for not putting up a bulletin board every time I teach them something new.
D- I would rather take a nap than work. Does that mean I shouldn't have to work?
E- I VOLUNTEER to teach this class. I could be using the hour to plan, but I decided to contribute instead. I don't get paid anymore than the teacher who gets a break while I work.

Oh, I am BEYOND irritated. Now, I must type up a list of everything they have learned. Ugh.

Tags!

Ok, first up from Stevy. I am supposed to post my sixth photo in my sixth album. What's with the 6-6 people? Hmmm... Okay. Here it goes...

This is from Jordan's commissioning ceremony. We had been married a year, and were glad to be moving to active duty! Looking at this album made me realize I don't have any good pictures of this day. Mom or Nancy, do you? Oh, and I also realized my red shoes are fabulous.

The next tag is from Tania. It's a little longer...
1. What were you doing before you started this post?
Laying in bed. Still trying to recover from the pink eye.

2. What is the last thing you read/are currently reading?

The last thing- Real Simple magazine, last book- The 19th Wife, currently reading- The Memory Keeper's Daughter

3. Do you nap a lot?
I try to. Working out does NOT give me more energy, and Kindergarten is very tiring!

4. Who was the last person you hugged?
Person- One of my students, Most recently- My sweet cat, Reagan

5. What is your favorite TV series?

I like Big Love, The Tudors, and Lipstick Jungle. Grey's Anatomy lost my interest. Having sucky TV doesn't help!

Hmm, the fully furnished part is kind of odd, I suppose I would go for Santorini. I LOVED that place!

11. Favorite Vacation spot?

See above...

12. Say something to the person who tagged you:
Tania is a great military wife "friend" who is currently coming to the end of a deployment. Anyone who can get through a deployment is AMAZING!

13. Name one thing you just can't resist no matter how bad it is for you:

Fast food. I'm not big on the desserts, but cheeseburgers- mmmmm!

14. What is your favorite item of clothing?

My work out pants. I'm wearing them now!

15. What would your American Gladiator name be and why?
Um, Bootylicious? I would never be on that show!

16. Name one thing you can not live with out:
My Husband!

17. Has a celebrity's haircut ever influenced you on your own hairstyle?

Nope, my German haircutter decides what will look good.

18. What is your drink of choice.
Sweet Tea. Mmmm, I could have it all day!

19. What would you eat for one meal, if you could eat anything and not gain the calories or fat grams, etc?

20. What are you wearing right now?
White long sleeve t-shirt and black work out pants.

22. If you were to have a baby boy and girl tomorrow, what would you name them?
If I had a baby girl and boy tomorrow I would be totally pissed. But, later on, I have no idea. For a girl- Hadley or Madison, For a boy- Caleb or Aiden
It's hard when you teach because certain names are always ruined for you!

That's all for now. 3 more days until Italy!

Saturday, February 7, 2009

Finally!

I feel like I haven't traveled in FOREVER! I know, it's been a month, but it feels like an eternity. Luckily, I will get to travel this week!

Wednesday I am heading down to Aviano (Italy) to hang with Jordan. He has already been there over a week.

Thursday I am shopping in Pordenone, and then heading to a formal at Castel Brando. A ball in a castle, AMAZING!

Friday we head to Venice to explore the city. Saturday, back to Venice for Carnivale! (Venice for Carnivale is THE place to go. It would be like Mardi Gras in NOLA, or Carnival in Rio!)

Sunday and Monday we will be in Croatia and Slovenia.

We are excited to see Venice, and to add 2 more countries to the list. I am currently at 11 countries visited here, and our goal is to be at 20 by the time we leave.

(Since I am always trying to figure this out, I will blog it. For my records, I have visited: Germany, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Holland, Italy (+Sicily), Greece, Turkey, Ireland, Poland, and Switzerland. Planning to add: Croatia, Slovenia, Egypt, South Africa, Austria, Spain, Czech Republic, Scotland, and England.)

I honestly don't know how people come over here and stay on base. Traveling is the best part!

PS- The eye is looking MUCH better today. I guess it was pink eye. Since none of my students had it, I am assuming I picked it up from the gym. Ewww! Hopefully by tomorrow it will be totally gone!

Have You Seen the Movie "Hitch"?

If so, you will totally see the resemblance.

This morning.

This afternoon.

Oh yes, I've got the pink eye. At least that's what the doctor says. The German doctor. No appointments were open on base. So I'm putting in the drops. I think I somehow scratched the white part of my eye. If this is pink eye, it is the most painful pink eye in the world.

SWEET!

So, if you read this post, you know I was complaining about changing my eating habits and working out 4 times a week with NO difference in the weight area.

Yes, I know I am not a "big" girl and that I don't have 30 pounds to lose. It was just a number to get my point across. Blah blah blah.

Well today we were finally able to get our body fast tested. I started at 17.9% body fat (athletic category). Not a bad start, but my cellulite told me there was room for improvement. Guess what it was today????

12.5%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you Lord! This gave me the encouragement I need to keep going!

And yes, I know this is low. However, see me in a swim suit, and I assure you you will not be calling me Lindsay Lohan, okay? J Lo maybe. Lindsay, not so much.

Also, I would like you to know that the body fat pincher and a ridiculous sunburn do not make a pleasant pair.

Oh, and in case you were wondering. Dinner tonight- Taco Bell :) I did make good choices though, thanks to this book Eat This, Not That.

Clearly I Am Alone

How can you tell I am alone? Well, by my dinner choices of course!

Sunday Night- Sandwich
Monday- McDonalds
Tuesday- Chips, Salsa, Girl Scout Cookies
Wednesday- Burger King

(If you are even thinking that this is why my weight has stayed the same I will poke you in the eye. With a fork. From Burger King.)

What will I do when Jordan leaves for a year? Oh well. At least the guy at Burger King said I was hot. Ha!

Awkward!

So I love this show on TLC. The Duggars fascinate me, they really do. While trying to find a way to watch it online, I came across the engagement video of the oldest Duggar son. Talk about AWKWARD! Watch...

Now let's see...
A. Her parents awkwardly leave to give them time to talk.
B. They are in the equivalent of a Denny's.
C. He just stands up and asks her. No buttering her up or anything.
D. They side hug to show their happiness.
E. He laughs the entire time.
F. He tells her the size of the diamond.
G. The parents come back and sit down like normal.

Yeah, odd.

The Biggest Loser Effect

So way back in the fall after getting back from the cruise, I started working out. I have been pretty faithful, only missing a workout a week a few times. So, even on my "bad" weeks, I was at the gym 3 times!

At the beginning we were tested for strength, body fat, BMI, etc. My BMI and body fat both started in the excellent categories so I knew I was doing okay, but the cottage cheese on my legs and butt- not so excellent.

We just did our test again this week. I have not lost a single pound. NOT ONE.

Yes, my cellulite has decreased, I can do more push-ups and sit-ups, I can lift more weight, run longer, etc. But my scale hasn't changed. Not even a tiny bit.

Call it the Biggest Loser effect, but I expect the scale to be moving. I want to drop a size or 10. I want to see some results! What do I get? More push-ups? BOOOOO! That sucks!

I want to lose 30 pounds and win some money. Anyone feel me?
